11. How does an online course work?

1. Multiple participants from the same organization?

Class size is limited. Often it is not possible to register more than one person from the same organization. This allows the IL NET to serve more centers and SILCs and encourages a broader dialog among participants from many organizations. If space permits, it is occasionally possible to register more than one person from an organization. ILRU will maintain a list of persons waiting to get get into the class. To be put on the list contact Dawn Heinsohn at heinsohn@ilru.org

2. Do you have a cancellation policy and are refunds available?

Cancellations and requests for refunds must be received in writing or by e‑mail before the first day of the course. After the course begins, no refunds will be made. Only a limited number of participants can be accepted for each course. Dropping the course after the class begins prevents others from participating.

3. Will I be notified if I am accepted?

You will be notified of your acceptance by e‑mail AFTER the registration deadline has passed.

4. How much does it cost and what is the payment policy.

The registration fee for each of the IL Net online courses is $100 per person. Payment is due at the time of registration. Those who have not paid cannot be admitted to the class orientation or the course.

5. What do I do if I need assistance?

You can contact Dawn Heinsohn, (heinsohn@ilru.org)ILRU at 713-520-0232 ext. 130, your course instructor, or Jeff Sheen (jeffs@cpd2.usu.edu) and/or Alma Burgess (alma@cpd2.usu.edu) from Utah State University.

6. What if I don’t know anything about the Internet and being “online”?

One week before the course begins, we will provide an orientation to our course Web site. You will learn the purpose of each of the sections of the Web site and how to use them. You will learn how to move between the different sections of the Web site. You can practice using your user name and password to enter the Web site. You can practice posting messages and responding to messages and post a profile to introduce yourself to other participants. When the course begins, you will be familiar with the Web site and will have the skills you need to participate in the course.

It is helpful if you have a working knowledge of your computer and the programs you may need to use to take the online course (speech software, etc.).

7. Can I take the course if I do not work for a center or SILC?

The IL Net receives funding to provide training and technical assistance to centers for independent living and statewide independent living councils in the United States. Because spaces in our online courses are limited, we usually only accept registrations from individuals who are in some way affiliated with a center or SILC. However, if we have a course that was not filled, we would accept participants from other organizations.

8. Where and when does the class meet?

Online courses are conducted via the Internet on a course Web site. The wonderful thing about online courses is that you do not have to be available at a specific time each day. You can complete your course work and participate in the discussion in “virtual time.” This means that you can access the course Web site at any time of the day or night.  You can work when it is most convenient for you and still get the full benefit of the discussion. You can access the course Web site from any computer with an Internet connection, so you can take the course from the location that is most comfortable for you–at home or at work

10.
How much time does the course require each day?

For most of the courses, the instructors estimate that you will spend at least one hour per day reading, completing course work and participating in the discussion. Some days may require more. Participants who keep up with the discussion each day get more out of the course than people who skip days and try to catch up.

11. How does an online course work?

You may be familiar with discussion boards or message boards, where you post a message and other people respond. Our online courses work much the same way. The interaction in an IL Net online course takes place on the course Web site. When you register for the course, you will receive the address for the course Web site, and your user name and password. Each day, you will read the background material and exercises in the course manual-which is posted on the course Web site. Then you post your responses on the discussion section of the course Web site. The instructor and the other participants will respond to your comments, and you will be able to respond to the comments they post.
