IL-NET First Biennial IL Institute: A Deep Dive into Consumer Control and Leadership (7 Hours)
About the training
This training will address how CILs can be successful in encouraging and supporting the development of leaders with disabilities as board, staff, and advocates in Centers for Independent Living, in the disability rights movement, and in community, state, and national roles. The vital relationship between leadership and consumer control and its impact on CIL operations will be explored. In this first-of-its-kind learning experience for CILs presenters will explore the importance of consumer control that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive, and how it impacts leadership development and guides community-led efforts.
Target Audience
- Board members, executive directors, assistant directors, program managers, and staff of Centers for Independent Living, and individuals with disabilities.
- Also welcome are members and staff of Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs), leaders of state independent living services (ILS) programs, designated state entities (DSEs), public officials, researchers, and other practitioners.
Learning Objectives – You Will be Able to:
- Understand the IL Model and how CILs can address the discriminatory practices and inequities it reveals
- Describe the essential ways that CILs differ from other nonprofit organizations
- Explain how CILs can continuously nurture disability leadership and maintain consumer control
- Recognize how CILs can become diverse, inclusive, and welcoming to members of previously unserved and underserved groups
- Specify how consumer control informs how an entire CIL is operated
