Last June, two districts in Bangladesh received record-breaking rainfall, a historic deluge that affected more than 7.2 million people, according to an estimate by the United Nations. When the U.N. stepped in to assist with relief efforts, it listed persons with disabilities among the groups first in line for assistance. Yet advocates at Harvard Law School report that a disability humanitarian relief effort they developed in collaboration with local disability rights advocates identified many aid recipients with disabilities that had been left out of other humanitarian efforts.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (CN) — A federal investigation determined South Carolina violates the rights of mentally ill adults by placing them in overly restrictive group homes.

Some 2,000 people with serious mental illness were institutionalized in community residential care facilities, or what a report Thursday from the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice calls adult care homes.

The Biden-Harris administration has announced the launch of ALL INside, a first-of-its-kind initiative to address unsheltered homelessness across the country. Through the initiative, the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) and its 19 federal member agencies will partner with state and local governments to strengthen and accelerate local efforts to get unsheltered people into homes in six places: Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Phoenix Metro, Seattle and the State of California.

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has entered into a voluntary resolution agreement with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania through its Department of Human Services (PA DHS), protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, including persons in recovery from substance use disorder, based on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
